TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher) and PGT (Post Graduate Teacher) are two categories of teachers in India. These categories primarily differ based on the level of school classes they are qualified to teach and their educational qualifications.
- TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher): TGTs are trained graduate teachers qualified to teach secondary classes (classes up to 10th standard). The minimum qualification required to become a TGT is a Bachelor’s degree in a particular subject along with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree.
- PGT (Post Graduate Teacher): PGTs are post-graduate teachers qualified to teach senior secondary classes (classes 11th and 12th). The minimum qualification required to become a PGT is a Master’s degree in a particular subject along with a B.Ed degree.
To be appointed as a TGT or PGT, candidates usually need to clear specific teacher recruitment exams conducted by various states or central bodies. These exams test the candidate’s knowledge in their chosen subject area, teaching aptitude, and general awareness. Some common teacher recruitment exams in India are CTET, KVS, DSSSB, UPTET, etc.
The main responsibility of TGTs and PGTs is to provide quality education to students, create lesson plans, evaluate student performance, and guide students in their academic pursuits.
